As if becoming the first black president wasn't momentous enough, Barack Obama has just been handed a new title: "First gay president. A Newsweek magazine cover bestowed that distinction on Obama this week with a picture of the president and a rainbow halo. That's not to say the president's announcement is necessarily a watershed moment. It earned him kudos and criticism despite the fact that he left the legal standing of same-sex marriage in the hands of the states and made no policy changes.

Meet the New Yorker who hopes to be America's first black gay congressman
Recently, I traveled to Puerto Rico with a group of eight gay and bisexual men. Some of them I knew well, the others I had either just met or knew in passing. For the most part, we all got along and enjoyed getting to know one another on a deeper level. But through conversation, the trip brought to the surface elements of Black gay life and culture that mainstream media seem to either overexpose or deemphasize. And that is where the problem lies: fighting for the visibility of all Black gay men.
First, understand that acknowledging the ways in which you perpetuate racism is not nearly as painful as being on the receiving end of that racism. As a black, Latino gay man raised in the conservative South, I too once internalized problematic beliefs. To unpack and understand what makes sexual preferences racist, you have to understand that anti-blackness is a core American value.
