And it had to be Fresh. The final list was culled from a longlist of hundreds, after which the films were ranked according to the Adjusted Tomatometer, which acts as a kind of inflation adjustment, taking into consideration the Tomatometer score, as well as the number of reviews a film received relative to the average number of reviews for films released that same year. We did not include miniseries, leaving out seminal works like Angels in America , nor movies made for TV. And we recognize that some of the films in the list will re-ignite healthy debates that have been fixtures of discussion around LGBTQ films — straight actors playing gay characters, cis actors playing trans characters, and the historical dominance of white male perspectives. For now, join us as we celebrate the work of hundreds of filmmakers whose talents and risks have opened up the possibilities of cinema.

I remember the first time I watched The Red Shoes. I was a child, it was on the television some rainy afternoon, and I watched it on my own. I think I was probably expecting a straightforward retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale, also called The Red Shoes — though why that would be reassuring viewing I don't know, since Andersen's story, like his disturbing tale The Little Mermaid, is a thoroughly disquieting piece of work. Instead, this film — which I would later discover was made in , by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger — was set in postwar London, with an aspiring ballerina at its heart , played by the luminous, flame-haired Moira Shearer. The Red Shoes of the title is the name of the ballet that is created for Shearer's character, Victoria Page. And one of the overwhelming triumphs of the film is the utterly original vision of that ballet, which we see at the centre of the film.
In his acting career, which stretches over half a century, Christopher Plummer has appeared in more than movies. But no matter how good he is — and he is often very good — he may always be remembered as a certain singing Austrian navy captain named von Trapp. His latest role may help audiences forget about The Sound of Music , for a while anyway. In Beginners , Plummer plays Hal, a retired museum director who, after the death of his wife of 45 years, comes out as a gay man. Hal finds a younger boyfriend, throws parties, and visits dance clubs, sharing his adventures with his very confused adult son, Oliver, played by Ewan McGregor.
